White Shark or Great White Shark?

Does Wikipedia have it correct?  This is the first time I've seen it written that the lamniformes order of sharks is commonly referred to as the mackerel sharks OR the white sharks.  My understanding was that  "white shark" was the common name for charcarodon charcarias, and that the "great" was something unofficial, such as "white pointer", "white death", etc. were also unofficial.
